New cars for staff help keep Pender Home Health patients on the road to recovery

March 10, 2009
The nurses and therapists who work for Pender Home Health love helping their patients get back on the road to recovery. But, in order to do so, they rack up thousands of miles driving to homes throughout Pender and New Hanover counties and portions of Bladen, Brunswick, Columbus, Duplin, Onslow and Sampson counties.

Now, the drive for those traveling health care professionals just got a lot better thanks to a fleet of brand new 2009 Nissan Versas that arrived at the Pender Home Health headquarters on Monday, March 9.

“Pender Home Health, which is a service of Pender Memorial Hospital, has seen astronomical growth over the last few years under the leadership of Tina Davis,” said PMH Administrator David Long. “We are so pleased to be able to provide these cars to our staff so they can continue going out into the communities we serve to deliver top-notch home health care.”

Pender Home Health has contracted with Enterprise Fleet Management to provide nine vehicles for the staff members who opted to take advantage of the company car program. Arrangements could be made for the staff to use their company car for personal driving as well. The program was a tremendous satisfier for the staff and it should represent significant cost savings for the home health agency as well.

“It’s a win-win. Our staff is thrilled to have the opportunity to drive a company car instead of keeping track of mileage and worrying about maintenance on their own vehicles,” said Tina Davis, Pender Home Health Director. “Also, I think having the Pender Home Health logo visible on side the new cars creates a real sense of pride for our staff.”

“Our vehicle is like our office so it is wonderful to have a comfortable, new car when you are driving as much as we do,” said Ellen James, Licensed Physical Therapist, who put close to 50,000 miles on her car last year. “The logo on the car also helps our patients feel safer because they are able to identify who is pulling into their driveway immediately.”

Staff members including nurses, therapists and home health aides are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. They provide skilled nursing care, physical, occupational, speech and infusion therapies and medical social work. Diabetes management and wound care services are also available.

“The Pender Home Health staff are on the frontlines helping the hospital meet its mission to provide quality primary health care to the citizens of Pender County and surrounding communities,” said Al Owens, Board Chair. “They have seen incredible growth over the past year, but they still fully understand that their goal is to serve the individual needs of each patient and his or her family.”

Pender Home Health is licensed by the NC Department of Health and Human Services to provide home health services. It is certified for Medicare and Medicaid under CMS and NC DMA and accredited by the Joint Commission.

“Happy employees make for happier patients,” said Ms. James, with a smile. “And we always do our best to keep our patients happy!”
