We have more than 7,500 team members at NHRMC. To be chosen as Employee of the Year is a truly remarkable feat. You must be committed to our mission, devoted to your teammates and instinctively equipped to help anyone at any time.
During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Nick Boehne, an emergency department technician at New Hanover Regional Medical Center, provided a calm, steady influence for patients and teammates.
On one occasion, a 90-year-old patient was brought into the emergency department. The patient was scared, struggling to breathe, and – of course – alone.
That’s when Nick recognized the opportunity to make a difference. He outfitted himself in personal protective equipment and went into the patient’s room. He held his hand and talked to him. He updated the patient’s family members on his condition, providing comfort for a worried family who knew they wouldn’t be able to see their family member.
This behavior is standard practice for Nick, who often works in triage, one of the most stressful parts of the emergency department.
His compassion and sincerity were some of the reasons he was recognized as our Employee of Excellence for July.
Then we heard another story about Nick.
During a busy day in the ED, Nick recognized the look of distress on a patient in line for triage. He immediately took him aside to get his vital signs and an EKG. Nick recognized that the patient was having a STEMI and made sure the patient received immediate care. The patient was treated without delay and had a great outcome.
There are more unreported stories about Nick. He’s humble and modest and doesn’t look for attention. He simply wants to provide the best, most compassionate care for our patients.
For this, Nick Boehne truly deserves to be NHRMC’s 2021 Employee of the Year.
